Bio

David Bucklow is a self-taught South African fine artist based in Cape Town whose work captures the spirit and beauty of the natural world, wildlife, landscapes, and the unique character of South Africa. Born in 1969 in Gauteng, Bucklowspent his early years developing his artistic vision while growing up on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal, where his love of drawing and sketching first emerged. From the age of five, his passion for art was evident — presenting his parents with his first lion sketch that still hangs in their home — and this early connection to nature would go on to inform the subject matter and emotional depth of his work. Although he began art through portraiture and observational drawing, Bucklow’s instinct drew him increasingly toward depictions of wildlife and the South African landscape, refining his skill to combine lifelike realism with expressive detail.

Artistic Practice

Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Bucklow focuses on rendering animals, landscapes, seascapes, and portraits with careful attention to detail, texture, and atmosphere. He often uses photographs taken during his travels across South Africa as reference, bringing field experiences and direct engagement with nature into his studio practice. Bucklow’s signature style is rooted in photorealistic representation — particularly in how he captures the eyes and presence of animals, giving his subjects a compelling sense of life and presence on the canvas. “When you get the eyes just right, the artwork comes to life,” he explains, a philosophy that resonates throughout his body of work. Bucklow’s work invites viewers to experience both the majestic and the intimate — from sweeping vistas to the piercing gaze of a leopard — reminding us of the vulnerability and vitality of life in nature.
