Bio

Sabelo Mkhaliphi is a critically recognised contemporary South African artist whose work explores the inner life and lived experiences of African women, using bold visual metaphors and layered narrative imagery.Born and raised in Soweto, Johannesburg in 1986, Mkhaliphi discovered his artistic voice early in life during community art classes at the Kopanong Community Centre in Dobsonville. He is largely self- taught, refining his skills through observation, disciplined practice, and deep engagement with visual forms rather than formal academic art training. Mkhaliphi’s practice bridges personal identity and collective narrative — using nuanced figuration and symbolic elements to invite reflection on hope, memory, urban experience, and emotional depth.

Artistic Practice

Working primarily with oil and acrylic paints and collage, Mkhaliphi constructs richly textured canvases that place African women at the centre of narrative expression. His compositions are often driven by the visual dialogue between subject and environment — particularly through the motif of reflections.

One of his most recognisable visual strategies is the use of reflections in eyewear or surfaces that mirror urban panoramas, memories, and emotional landscapes. These reflections act as portals — simultaneously revealing internal psychology and external social context. Through this layering, Mkhaliphi renders moments that are both fragile and profound.His work merges representation with metaphor, capturing the strength, dignity, and introspection of his subjects while inviting viewers to engage in deeper interpretation.
