Sunglasses Series

In this series, Sabelo Mkhaliphi employs the motif of sunglasses as both a visual and conceptual device. The reflective surfaces act as portals—capturing fragments of everyday life, movement, and memory— while simultaneously concealing the subject’s direct gaze.

Rather than revealing identity, Mkhaliphi shifts our attention outward, inviting the viewer to engage with the world as seen through the subject’s perspective. The interplay between concealment and reflection speaks to themes of introspection, presence, and the quiet negotiation between past experiences and the immediacy of the present.

Through this body of work, the artist offers a meditative exploration of how we see, what we carry, and what we choose to let go.
