Bio

We have had the privilege of presenting the work of NISTY, a Malawian artist whose practice centres on the emotional and symbolic world of children.

NISTY’s work is immediately recognisable through his distinctive use of dotted, almost beaded formations — reminiscent of ostrich-like markings — layered across and around the child’s figure. These markings represent humanity: the many individuals, voices, and energies that shape the world around us.

In his visual language, the child does not exist in isolation. Instead, the child becomes a vessel through which the world is observed — absorbing, reflecting, and reinterpreting human presence. The dots function as both protection and pressure; they surround the child, yet also become part of them.

What is particularly compelling is how NISTY preserves innocence within this complexity. Despite the density of human influence, the child’s expression remains open, soft, and emotionally accessible. There is no loss of purity — only an expansion of awareness.

Working in mixed media on stretched canvas, NISTY builds his surfaces through layered textures, combining controlled pattern with expressive, almost chaotic mark-making. This tension between structure and spontaneity mirrors the experience of growing up: shaped by the world, yet still forming an identity within it.

His work invites a simple but profound question: Do children see the world as it is — or as we present it to them? As a gallery, we are proud to represent NISTY’s work. It speaks not only to aesthetic appreciation, but to deeper reflection — positioning itself confidently within the space between contemporary African expression and long-term collectible value
